As a language and culture trainer, I am more interested in silence than what is actually said. What adjective do you assign to that period of quiet: respectful, awkward, peaceful, nerve-wracking?
Finland is often referred to as a place where silence abounds. This can be experienced in the small town of Suomussalmi in Eastern Finland. Reijo Heikkinen’s permanent installation Hiljainen kansa (direct translation Quiet people) is made up of 1000 peat-headed figures standing in a field on the side of the road. I happened upon them when they were all donning Jackie-Kennedy-like pillbox hats. I wonder if the non-verbal message they convey would be different in the summer when volunteers complete their semi-annual wardrobe change?
